BMI vs Body Fat Percentage: Which is a Better Metric?

For decades, doctors and health professionals have relied on BMI (Body Mass Index) to quickly assess whether a patient is underweight, at a healthy weight, overweight, or obese. But in recent years, fitness experts have increasingly pointed to Body Fat Percentage as a vastly superior metric. So, what's the difference?

What is BMI?

BMI is a simple mathematical formula developed in the 1830s. It calculates a number based purely on your height and weight. Because it only requires a scale and a measuring tape, it is incredibly easy to calculate.

The Flaw: BMI cannot distinguish between fat and muscle. Muscle is much denser than fat. As a result, a highly muscular athlete with very little body fat could weigh enough to be classified as "Obese" on a BMI chart. Conversely, someone with very low muscle mass but a high amount of visceral fat might score a "Healthy" BMI.

What is Body Fat Percentage?

Body Fat Percentage is exactly what it sounds like: the percentage of your total body weight that consists of fat tissue. Everything else—muscle, bones, organs, water—is considered "Lean Body Mass."

The Benefit: This metric gives a much more accurate picture of metabolic health. A healthy body fat percentage generally ranges from 10-20% for men and 20-30% for women. Knowing this number helps you determine whether your weight loss efforts are actually burning fat or just shedding water and muscle.

How Do I Measure Them?

While getting a DEXA scan is the most accurate way to measure body fat, you can get a very good estimate at home using a tape measure and the U.S. Navy Method. You can calculate this instantly using our Body Fat Calculator.

The Verdict

BMI is a decent, quick population-level screening tool, but it fails on an individual level for many people. If you are serious about your health and fitness journey, tracking your Body Fat Percentage—and adjusting your macros with a TDEE Calculator—will yield far better, more accurate results.
